Plasma physicist with a PhD from the Swiss Plasma Center, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He is a Research Scientist with General Atomics, Fusion Division, on long-term assignment at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), USA. Canal is an Associate Professor (and former Visiting Professor) at the Institute of Physics, University of São Paulo (USP), where he coordinates the TCABR tokamak upgrade project. He also coordinates the Plasma Physics area of the Brazilian Physical Society (SBF) and serves as Vice President of the Superior Council of the Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN). He is Associate Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Physics for Plasma Physics and Nuclear Fusion, and a member of the Plasma Physics Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).
