Matteo Barbarino


Nuclear fusion physicist, International Atomic Energy Agency. Dr. Matteo Barbarino is the lead fusion scientist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he supports the advancement of global efforts in fusion energy research and development. Since joining the IAEA in 2017, he has fostered collaborations with leading institutions including ITER and the Fusion Industry Association, among other key stakeholders. Before joining the IAEA, Dr. Barbarino conducted laser fusion research across laboratories in the United States and Europe, contributing to experimental and theoretical advancements in the field. Besides his main role, he serves as Technical Adviser to the International Group of Legal Experts on Fusion Energy (FELEX) and participates in several international committees, including those at ITER and the IEA. He has been lead author on major IAEA publications like Fusion Key Elements, World Fusion Outlook, Fundamentals of Magnetic Fusion Technology, and AI for Accelerating Nuclear Applications, Science and Technology.
